"Devoted" (Acts 2:42)

Today, I would like to share a little bit about one of my experiences this summer serving at my local church. Probably the highlight of this summer was the "pre-teen mission trip". We took our kids to the Inner-City Cleveland to work alongside a ministry that works with the poor/outcast community. Anyway, one of the things that were really special about this trip was the Bible Text we studied before/during the trip. Before we left for the trip, the children's pastor and I were thinking and meditating in Acts chapter two. We started studying and we thought it would be cool to ministry to the kids about the fellowship of the believers in the early church and what ways they engaged in the disciplines of faith taught by Jesus. It is amazing for me to think how greatly God used them. There was such an impact through the apostles' ministry because they had learned from Jesus what means to be devoted as this verse illustrates:

"They devoted themselves in themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of the bread and to prayer" (Acts 2:42 - NIV).

This verse shows the apostle's submission to the life and teachings of Jesus. After experiencing three years along with the Master, they had seen how Jesus taught, prayed, ministered communion, served the community, etc. Therefore, they wanted to put in practice what they had learned and they did so by experiencing the help and instruction of the Holy Spirit. They all were filled with the Holy Spirit and by the wonders they were seeing in the life of the early church (Acts 2:43)

Anyhow, it was really neat to see in the life of the kids their willingness to engage and grow in the disciplines presented in this verse. In order for us to experience the “inbreaking” of the Kingdom we must be devoted. We need to be willing to experience growth by allowing God’s love to shape us and flow through us.
